Singapore: At the 25th Conference of Electric Power Supply Industry (CEPSI 2025), Huawei introduced new intelligent perimeter fiber sensing capabilities for its Intelligent Substation Solution, highlighting the growing role of digitalisation, automation, and artificial intelligence in grid modernisation.

Speaking at the event, Jason Li, President of Huawei’s Electric Power Digitalization Business Unit, said that the integration of digital and AI technologies into the power sector will be essential to achieving both operational stability and flexibility.

Traditional substations often rely on manual inspection and passive monitoring, which can leave critical risks undetected. Huawei’s new system uses fiber optics and AI-powered sensing algorithms to identify vibration changes and distinguish between personnel movement and foreign object intrusion. The technology coordinates with management systems for on-site verification, aiming to achieve minimal false alarms and missed detections.

Leo Zhang, Vice President of Huawei Enterprise Optical Network Domain, explained that the AI-based sensing solution enhances both perimeter protection and underground cable security, providing continuous monitoring with improved accuracy and resilience. “This significantly increases safety, reduces inspection costs, and improves operational efficiency,” he said.

Jacky Wang, Vice President of the Electric Power Digitalization Business Unit, underlined the importance of real-time, high-quality data and reliable communications networks to fully harness AI’s potential in the energy sector.

Huawei also hosted the IDS Club roundtable and APAC Energy Power Partner Forum during CEPSI, engaging over 4,000 energy leaders and government representatives in discussions on smart grids and digital transformation.
