Hybrid AC/DC grids for a resilient future
HVDC-WISE leads innovations in hybrid AC/DC systems to boost grid resilience, control, and cybersecurity across Europe.

As global electrification accelerates, building a more resilient and reliable power grid has become critical. The HVDC-WISE project, part of the Horizon Europe program, is developing smarter control and protection strategies for hybrid AC/DC systems, combining the flexibility of AC with the efficiency of HVDC.
One breakthrough is in advanced control techniques. The project improved grid-forming control by addressing its interaction with DC voltage droop, resolving issues like harmonic instability and enhancing fault recovery. Coordinated strategies—like using fuzzy logic and PI controllers—helped reduce overshoot and improve system recovery after disruptions.
To tackle wider grid needs, HVDC-WISE introduced wide area services such as frequency control and AC line emulation, managed through a decoupled control layer. This enables the grid to respond dynamically to changing conditions.
In multi-terminal DC grids, the project used model predictive control to stabilize operations, ensuring smooth transitions and managing unbalanced loads effectively.
On the protection front, HVDC-WISE emphasized the need for adaptive protection schemes suited for converter-dominated grids. Traditional approaches no longer meet the demands of modern systems.
Finally, recognizing rising cyber threats, the project developed AI-driven anomaly detection tools, integrating both physical and digital indicators for robust cybersecurity.
By advancing control, protection, and security, HVDC-WISE is setting the stage for a future-proof, flexible, and secure European energy grid.
