USA, Alabama: HD Hyundai Electric is expanding its presence in the United States with a major investment aimed at the extra-high-voltage transformer market. The company has started construction of a second plant in Alabama, committing about $200 M to increase capacity and begin producing 765kV transformers. The facility is expected to be completed by April 2027 and could generate roughly $134 M (200 billion won) in additional annual revenue once fully operational.
The project will lift the company’s extra-high-voltage production by around 50 %. It also introduces 765 kV transformers, a key technology used in long-distance power transmission. These units support large substations and help move electricity efficiently across vast regions, making them essential for expanding power networks and integrating renewable energy.
By strengthening its manufacturing base in North America, HD Hyundai Electric aims to respond to strong demand from utilities. The United States is seeing rising electricity consumption, partly driven by AI data centres that require stable, high-capacity connections. At the same time, federal incentives and grid modernisation plans are encouraging more long-distance transmission lines, many of which use higher-voltage infrastructure to reduce losses.
For the global transformer market, this expansion could slightly ease supply constraints that have caused long delivery times for large units. However, strong demand in the US may still keep prices relatively firm. Key raw materials such as electrical steel and copper will remain important cost factors.
Investors will be watching how smoothly the plant ramps up. Possible risks include delays during construction, labour availability and fluctuations in component costs. Progress toward the April 2027 completion date and future order bookings will be important indicators of success.
