USA, Indiana, Fort Wane: Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) is set to invest around $34 M to enhance the electric transmission network serving downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana. The project, known as the Eastern Melita Area Improvements, is designed to improve reliability, reduce equipment maintenance, and prepare the grid for economic expansion.
The upgrades include:
- Construction of approximately 8 km (5 mi) of new 69-kV power lines
- Rebuilding around 5 km (3 mi) of existing 69-kV lines
- Removal of about 8 km (5 mi) of older transmission lines
- Modernisation of six substations: Lincoln, Melita, Anthony, Omnisource, Wet Weather Pumping Station (WWPS) Stormwater, and the TRFT Three Rivers Water Filtration Switch
- Upgrades to the INCA Tap Switch, located between Anthony and Lincoln substations
Specific locations include Lincoln Substation off State Route 930 at Estella Avenue, Melita Substation at Melita Street and Webster Street, Anthony Substation at South Anthony Boulevard and Lanternier Street, Omnisource Substation near East Washington Boulevard and South Coliseum Boulevard, and the WWPS Stormwater on Dwenger Avenue.
I&M notes that these improvements will enhance the reliability of electric service for local customers, minimise the need for frequent repairs, and ensure the grid is ready to support future business and community growth.
Construction is scheduled to start in autumn 2027 and is expected to be completed by early 2029, delivering a stronger, more resilient transmission network for Fort Wayne.
