Japan: Electric Power Development Co., Ltd., widely known as J-POWER, has announced the start of commercial operations at the Kitakyushu Hibikinada Offshore Wind Farm.
The project was awarded by the City of Kitakyushu through a public tender in February 2017 and is operated by a consortium that includes J-POWER. Following the award, Hibiki Wind Energy Co., Ltd., a J-POWER subsidiary, carried out surveys and preparation activities before construction began in March 2023.
The offshore wind facility consists of 25 large-scale turbines, each with a generation capacity of 9,600 kW. Together they deliver a total capacity of 220 MW, making the installation the largest offshore wind power plant currently operating in Japan.
The wind farm is expected to remain in operation for approximately 20 years, supplying renewable electricity while supporting the country’s transition towards cleaner energy sources.
According to J-POWER, the project is part of the company’s broader “BLUE MISSION 2050” strategy, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality. By applying its experience in renewable energy development, the company intends to support the expansion of wind power while ensuring reliable and stable operation across Japan.
