India, Karnataka, Bangalore: Karnataka’s Energy Minister KJ George announced that the state government will ramp up annual transformer production to 2,500 units to improve supply efficiency and meet growing demand.
Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a new transformer repair centre at KAVIKA, a the state-owned transformer manufacturer, George emphasised the government’s focus on enhancing maintenance and reliability in the power sector. The new centre, established at a cost of $1.6 M (₹14 crore), will boost repair capabilities for transformers up to 20 MW capacity. The Minister directed that construction be completed within six months.
To support increased production, the government is also arranging additional working capital through Electricity Supply Companies (Escoms) and banking institutions. This move is expected to strengthen infrastructure and streamline operations across Karnataka’s power supply network.
Later that day, George also inaugurated the new building of BESCOM’s S-16 Madiwala Sub-Division Office in BTM Layout, under the Koramangala zone. This facility, which now serves approximately 83,000 electricity connections, was constructed at a cost of $370,000 (₹3.17 crore), according to an official statement.
The combined efforts to boost manufacturing, improve repair operations, and expand service facilities reflect Karnataka’s push toward a more reliable and responsive energy infrastructure.
