Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) is embarking on a transformative project to revolutionise the region’s electricity network. Under the Centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), KPDCL plans to install 7,000 new substations across Kashmir valley.
This ambitious project aims to significantly enhance the quality and reliability of power supply in all ten districts of Kashmir Division. The work is divided among KPDCL, NTPC, and PESL, each responsible for different geographical areas.
The upgrade extends beyond substations. The project includes the installation of consumer smart meters and 40,670 distribution transformer meters. Additionally, 15,000 km of LT-AB (Aerial Bunched) cable will be laid.
The new infrastructure will increase the system’s carrying capacity, allowing KPDCL to meet growing consumer demands, especially in rural areas. The smart metering system will enhance billing efficiency, while the LT-AB cable installation aims to reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial losses.
KPDCL has set an ambitious target to provide uninterrupted power supply to its consumers within the next two years. This goal is supported by the ongoing feeder metering of 1,485 units at the 11 kV level.
To facilitate these upgrades, KPDCL has announced several power shutdowns across various areas. These shutdowns are necessary for repair work and infrastructure improvements. The corporation has urged consumers to cooperate, emphasising that these temporary inconveniences are crucial for the long-term benefits of the project.
In a related development, Aaquib Sultana Waheed Deva has been appointed as In-Charge Chief Engineer (Distribution) for KPDCL. This appointment is expected to provide leadership and oversight to the ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
By addressing key issues such as power quality, reliability, and efficiency, KPDCL aims to transform the region’s electricity landscape. As these improvements take shape, residents of Kashmir can look forward to a more stable and efficient power supply in the coming years.
