Africa, Kenya: Kenya Power has placed an urgent order for 3,319 distribution transformers from local manufacturers, aiming to clear a growing backlog of customers waiting for power connections and replace stolen units. The order, set to be delivered within 14 days, will address both immediate and long-term needs, with over 85 % of the transformers dedicated to connecting customers who have already paid for their services.
John Ngeno, Kenya Power’s General Manager for Supply Chain and Logistics, explained that the remaining transformers will replace those that have been vandalised, leaving customers without power. The transformers required range from 25 kVA to 100 kVA, with the majority being 50 kVA units.
The utility has expedited the procurement process in an effort to meet the 14-day deadline. However, the total value of the order remains undisclosed. The shortage of transformers has been exacerbated by budget cuts from the National Treasury, which impacted Kenya Power’s ability to procure critical equipment. Despite these challenges, the utility is focused on overcoming delays in customer connections and addressing power outages caused by theft and vandalism.
Kenya Power aims to expand its customer base further, having already connected 194,654 new customers, bringing the total to nearly 10 million, bolstered by improved financial performance.
