Croatia / Sweden: In January 2026, Nynas joined KONČAR – Distribution and Special Transformers Inc. (KONČAR – D&ST) in Zagreb for the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) of a power transformer designed for an innovative grid project in Sweden. The transformer will be installed at E.ON’s new substation in Karlshammar in southern Sweden, the country’s first transformer station built mainly using wood.
The Karlshammar project, developed by electricity network operators E.ON, aims to introduce a more climate-friendly approach to substation construction. The use of wood as a primary building material helps reduce the facility’s carbon footprint by around 17 percent. The project also integrates several sustainability measures, including reused components, carbon-reduced steel, climate-improved concrete and the use of HVO-fuelled construction machinery.
KONČAR – D&ST has been selected to design and manufacture the station’s 10 MVA transformer, combining advanced engineering solutions with sustainable materials.
“We are constantly working on integrating more energy-efficient designs, advanced materials, and digital monitoring solutions into our transformer portfolio,” said Ivanka Radić, Chemical Engineer at KONČAR – D&ST.
Nynas contributes to the project with NYTRO® RR 900X, a re-refined transformer fluid produced entirely from end-of-life insulating oil. Over its lifetime, the fluid can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70 percent compared to conventional transformer oils.
The transformer successfully passed all routine, type and special tests in accordance with IEC 60076 standards. Commissioning of the Karlshammar substation is planned for late 2026.
