South Korea, Busan: LS Electric has completed the construction of its second ultrahigh-voltage transformer plant at the company’s Busan complex. The plant, located in Gangseo District, Busan, was formally opened at a ceremony attended by LS Electric Chairman Koo Ja-kyun, LS Group Chairman Koo Ja-eun, Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon and around 200 guests.

The new facility covers 18,059 m2, making it 1.3 times larger than the company’s first plant. LS Electric invested $68.4 M (100.8 B won) in the project, and the additional capacity is expected to increase output by 2.3 times. With the expansion, the Busan complex’s annual production capacity for ultrahigh-voltage transformers will rise from $136 M to $408 M (200 B won to 600 B won). The company aims to generate $680M (1 T won) in revenue from the site next year.

Koo said the investment is intended to strengthen LS Electric’s position in the global ultrahigh-voltage transformer market. Since 2010, the company has invested more than $286 M (420 B won) to develop the Busan complex into an integrated manufacturing base, producing transformers ranging from 145 kV to 550 kV. It also contains Korea’s only production base for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transformers.

Following the completion of the second plant, LS Electric plans to further expand its HVDC manufacturing capability to support national transmission network developments. The company expects the Busan complex to play a central role in future energy infrastructure projects and in its own international market expansion. Recent orders linked to the site include power distribution solutions for large North American data centres and ultrahigh-voltage transformer contracts for regional utilities.
