The Netherlands / Germany: India’s engineering giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has joined forces with Hitachi Energy to deliver HVDC converter stations for TenneT’s large-scale offshore wind transmission programme in the North Sea.
The partnership, officially nominated by the Dutch-German grid operator, will accelerate the integration of renewable energy into Europe’s grid infrastructure, strengthening transmission links between offshore wind farms and onshore power networks in the Netherlands and Germany.
“This collaboration is a significant step forward for L&T’s Offshore Wind Business. It validates our engineering and project management strengths and our ability to deliver integrated HVDC solutions for large-scale renewable projects,” said Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director and President of L&T.
L&T stated that its offshore wind business leverages multidisciplinary capabilities, alliances with leading global firms, and a strong supplier network, supported by three modular fabrication facilities capable of managing complex offshore projects.
The collaboration builds upon TenneT’s 2 GW programme, which includes 14 offshore grid connection projects designed to deliver power from the North Sea to the mainland. In March 2023, TenneT signed a framework agreement with a Hitachi Energy–Petrofac consortium for six of these connections, including IJmuiden Ver Alpha, Nederwiek 1, Nederwiek 3, Doordewind 1, Doordewind 2, and LanWin5.
Following Petrofac’s withdrawal after failing to meet contractual obligations, Hitachi Energy and L&T will jointly take over responsibilities to ensure continuity in the delivery of TenneT’s ambitious offshore transmission infrastructure.
