India, Madhya Pradesh: Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL) has energized a 400 kV, 500 MVA transformer at the 400 kV Suky Sewaniya (Bhopal) substation. The transformer was energized ahead of schedule, keeping in mind the potential additional load demand in Bhopal and surrounding areas during the upcoming rabi season.

With the installation of the transformer, apart from the urban and industrial areas of Bhopal, Bairagarh, Vidisha, Ganjabsoda, Shujalpur, Mughaliyachhap will get full benefit. If necessary, areas such as Ashta and Ujjain will also get support from the substation.

The transformer was customized to suit the substation. Usually, a conventional 315 MVA would have been installed but this specially designed transformer has resulted in 185 MVA of additional transformation capacity. With 500 MVA becoming available with the transformer, the transformation capacity of the substation is now 1630 MVA.

In Bhopal district, MPPTCL transmits power from 18 substations, which include one 400 kV, four of 220 kV and 13 of 132 kV rating. With the energization of this transformer, the total transformation capacity of the district has increased to 4463 MVA.
