Namibia sets aside $1 B for power generation and transmission

Namibia, Windhoek: Namibia has set aside about $1 B (N$15 B) for power generation and transmission projects.
The projects are now at different phases in a push by the Southern African country to achieve self-sustenance, an official from the state-owned power utility Nampower said 1 February.
The generation projects include two solar power plants of 20 MW each financed by the power utility as well as another one financed by Independent Power Producers (IPPs), two wind power projects of 40 MW and 50 MW and to be financed by Nampower and IPPs respectively as well as a biomass and diesel plant, said Nampower managing director Kahenge Haulofu.
Haulofu added that the power utility is also investing in the diesel fuel plant at the port town of Walvis Bay while pushing through a biomass project in the northern part of the country.
“So far, we have made significant progress in pre-planning for most of the projects. While other projects are still being dealt with by the central procurement board, others are waiting for environmental assessment clearance and others have experienced a slight delay because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Haulofu said.
