UK, England, Derbyshire: National Grid has launched the second stage of consultation on its proposed Chesterfield to Willington electricity transmission project in Derbyshire. The eight-week consultation, running from 3 March to 28 April, builds on feedback gathered during the initial stage.
The updated proposals include a new 400 kV overhead line of around 60 km linking a proposed new substation near Chesterfield with the existing Willington Substation. Plans also feature a new 400 kV substation close to the current 275 kV Chesterfield Substation and the 132 kV National Grid Electricity Distribution substation.
Following technical and environmental assessments, National Grid is presenting a more defined route alignment, including indicative pylon locations. An alternative route option between Astwith and Alfreton, positioned further east, has been introduced to avoid sensitive areas such as the River Amber valley and Ogston Reservoir.
Additional works would include limited replacement of existing overhead lines, local adjustments to lower-voltage networks and temporary construction infrastructure. The project also commits to delivering at least 10% Biodiversity Net Gain.
The development forms part of The Great Grid Upgrade, aimed at strengthening the electricity network as renewable generation increases and demand is forecast to double by 2050. If approved through the Development Consent Order process, construction could begin in 2029, with operation expected in 2031.
