Canada, Ontario, Toronto: Plans are moving forward for a new transmission line between Bowmanville and Pickering that will supply electricity to close to one million homes across the eastern Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
With Ontario’s energy demand expected to double over the next 30 years, according to the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), focus is on both new generation, such as nuclear, and the efficient delivery of that power to communities.
Hydro One has proposed a double-circuit 500 kV transmission line connecting the Bowmanville Switching Station in Clarington to the Cherrywood Transformer Station in Pickering. Once completed, the line is expected to deliver around 1,000 MW of electricity by 2032.
Sonny Karunakaran, Hydro One’s Vice-President of Strategic Projects & Partnerships, said the project will significantly expand capacity and provide reliable power to what he described as the province’s fastest-growing region. He added that the development will support ongoing economic growth in the eastern GTA.
To limit environmental and community impact, the proposed route will follow an existing Hydro One transmission corridor. However, public consultation remains an important part of the planning process. Karunakaran noted that community feedback will help shape construction methods and address local concerns.
Hydro One is organising three public open houses to gather input from residents.
