Nigeria: The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Power, has pledged to replace outdated transformers with modern ones and boost the operational capacity of Nigeria’s Armed Forces by ensuring stable electricity supply to all military bases nationwide.
Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, who made the pledge on 25 June 2025, announced plans to set up a high-level meeting involving all 11 DisCos and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to craft a sustainable, sector-wide approach.
In a statement from Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser to the Minister of Power, Minister Adebayo Adelabu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving electricity supply to military bases. The pledge came during a courtesy visit from Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff, as part of broader efforts to strengthen collaboration between the Nigerian Air Force and the Ministry of Power.
Adelabu emphasised that reliable electricity is critical for military security and national asset protection, citing a presidential directive to prioritise power for military installations. He acknowledged ongoing challenges such as outdated infrastructure and inadequate metering but noted that long-standing metering contracts are now being revived.
The Minister also highlighted progress, including a recently commissioned 3.1 MW mini grid at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, with similar projects underway in Jaji and other locations. Future plans include extending power upgrades to Air Force bases and integrating renewable energy into the military’s long-term energy strategy.
He stressed that the military requires stable and cost-effective power, tailored to its strategic role, not treated as a commercial consumer.
Air Marshal Abubakar praised the Minister’s reforms and stressed the importance of electricity to both national security and the economy. He raised concerns over illegal encroachment on military transmission lines and called for the Ministry’s support in resolving billing issues with Ikeja DisCo.
The Air Force, he affirmed, is committed to working with the Ministry to protect infrastructure and explore alternative energy solutions across its facilities.
