UK: Ocean Winds has signed an agreement for lease with the Crown Estate for a 1.5 GW floating offshore wind project in the Celtic Sea. The development forms part of the Crown Estate’s Round 5 programme aimed at expanding floating wind capacity in the United Kingdom.

The company was selected as the preferred developer for the site in November 2025 following a direct selection process carried out under the Procurement Act 2023.

With the lease agreement in place, Ocean Winds will now move into the next stage of the project. This phase will involve refining the wind farm design, carrying out both onshore and offshore site studies, conducting Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), engaging with local communities and securing the required planning permissions.

After these steps are completed, the developer will be able to apply for a lease to build and operate the wind farm. If the project progresses as planned, the facility could begin operating in the mid-2030s.

Julia Rose, head of offshore wind at the Crown Estate, said: “Round 5 is such an exciting opportunity to establish an innovative new technology at commercial scale in the UK, supporting many new jobs whilst also contributing to our national energy security and clean energy transition.”

“Ocean Winds entering into an agreement for lease for their site in the Celtic Sea is a significant moment and testament to the attractiveness of the UK’s world-leading offshore wind sector,” Rose added.
