Ontario backs new Sudbury–Barrie power line
Hydro One chosen to deliver a 500 kV priority transmission project with First Nations partnership to strengthen grid reliability.

Canada, Ontario: The Ontario government has selected Hydro One Networks Inc. to develop and build a new priority transmission line linking Sudbury and the Barrie area, aimed at strengthening the province’s north–south power network.
The project will involve a new single-circuit 500-kV transmission line stretching roughly 300 km from the Hanmer Transformer Station in Sudbury to the Essa Transformer Station near Barrie. It will also include expansions to related station facilities and is expected to be in service by 2032.
Alongside this, Hydro One has been directed to complete early development work for a second single-circuit 500 kV line on the same corridor. This additional work is intended to support future electricity generation in northern Ontario, improve system reliability and prepare the grid for long-term growth. The Independent Electricity System Operator will determine the recommended in-service date for the second line.
The project will be developed in partnership with First Nations through Hydro One’s First Nation Equity Partnership Model. Communities located near the route will be offered the opportunity to invest in up to 50 % equity stake in the transmission line component. Hydro One and participating First Nations will work together on planning, development and construction.
Hydro One said the new line will help connect new sources of generation, unlock additional capacity and reinforce the backbone of Ontario’s electricity system as demand continues to rise. Provincial ministers highlighted the role of the project in supporting mining activity, economic growth and long-term energy security across northern Ontario.
First Nations leaders said the project represents an important step towards economic opportunity, self-reliance and meaningful participation in shaping Ontario’s energy future.
