USA, Massachusetts, Middleton: A transformer explosion outside the Middleton House of Correction forced the evacuation of all 417 inmates on the evening of 6 January. The incident caused extensive damage to the jail, but only one minor injury was reported.

The blast occurred at around 6:30 p.m. near the facility’s largest housing unit, according to the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, which operates the jail. The Middleton Fire Department quickly responded and extinguished the fire. Following the explosion, 407 inmates were moved to other buildings within the facility.

The sheriff’s office said the evacuation was conducted in an orderly manner and that the incident was handled without major injuries.

“We train for emergencies like this, and tonight the professionalism, skill, and judgement of the Essex County Sheriff’s Department employees were on full display,” said Essex County Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger. “They managed a difficult and complex situation efficiently and effectively.”

The cause of the explosion has not yet been released.

As a result of the incident, the affected housing unit remains offline. On 7 January, the sheriff’s department announced that public visitation at the Middleton facility has been cancelled for the day.

Officials emphasised that safety protocols were followed throughout the evacuation and that all inmates are accounted for. Investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.

The event highlights the importance of emergency preparedness in correctional facilities and the coordination between law enforcement and fire services during critical incidents.
