Philippines: Prime Solar Solutions Corp. has received approval from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to connect its 48-MW-AC Maragondon solar power plant in Cavite to Manila Electric Co.’s (Meralco) TMC 2 115 kV substation.
In a decision dated 27 November, the ERC authorised Prime Solar to develop and own the point-to-point facilities needed to deliver the plant’s output to the grid. These include a 60 MVA takeoff substation, protection and telecommunications systems, and a 20.4-km single-circuit 115 kV transmission line.
While the project’s estimated cost had initially been placed at $16.3 M (P954.7 M), the regulator noted that actual costs reached $27.5 M (P1.61 B). Both the solar plant and its dedicated transmission facilities have already been completed, with commercial operations beginning at the start of 2025.
The ERC stressed that although Prime Solar’s connection application has been approved, all generation companies and grid users planning similar facilities must now secure prior authority before starting any development or construction.
Prime Solar is a subsidiary of Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc. (Prime Infra), which holds a controlling interest in Manila Water Co. Inc. and nearly 50 % of the Malampaya gas project. Last month, Prime Infra finalised a $853 M (P50 B) acquisition of most of First Gen Corp.’s gas assets under the Lopez group’s energy arm.
