USA, New Jersey: Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) has restored power to more than 140,000 customers across New Jersey following a stretch of severe summer storms and a historic heatwave. Working through high winds, downed lines, and high temperatures, PSE&G crews replaced over 500 transformers in just over a week.
The storms tested the grid’s capacity, with older infrastructure, such as 25 kVA transformers installed decades ago, unable to meet the demands of modern homes. In one instance, a single transformer serving eight houses was upgraded to two 50 kVA units, splitting the load evenly after engineers reviewed the increased energy needs of residents, including air conditioners and electric vehicles.
The utility’s appliance services division also responded to over 8,000 calls, many related to cooling system failures. PSE&G prioritised restoration to critical facilities like hospitals and emergency services, while also maintaining customer communication via its website, mobile app, and call center.
Crews were mobilised rapidly, using both field experience and new technologies to identify and prioritise high-impact repairs. Resources were shifted statewide to ensure the hardest-hit areas received immediate attention.
PSE&G credited its ability to respond quickly to its year-round preparation, investment in grid modernisation, and the dedication of its workforce. The company emphasised that infrastructure upgrades are essential to withstand extreme weather, which is expected to increase in frequency and intensity.
“Our systems held up well overall,” the company said. “Thanks to strategic planning and continued investment, we were able to respond quickly, safely, and effectively.”
