Iraq, Baghdad: Petroleum companies QatarEnergy and TotalEnergies have signed an agreement to develop a solar project of up to 1.25 GWp in Iraq. This is part of the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), which TotalEnergies has been promoting since 2021. QatarEnergy said it will acquire a 50% interest in the project, pending regulatory approval, with its French peer retaining the remaining 50%.
The facility will be located in the Basra region of Iraq and will feature 2 million high-efficiency bifacial solar panels mounted on single-axis trackers. The project will be developed in phases, with the partners aiming to commission them between 2025 and 2027. Once powered up, the complex will have the capacity to supply around 350000 homes in the Basra region.
“I am pleased to have concluded our entry into this very important project for Iraq’s energy sector, and look forward to working with our strategic partner, TotalEnergies, to progress it to fruition. We thank the Iraqi government for their trust, and TotalEnergies for this opportunity to support Iraq’s solar power development,” commented Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, CEO of QatarEnergy and Qatar’s energy minister.
