Germany, Bedburg: RWE and the town of Bedburg are continuing their renewable energy partnership by launching a third joint wind farm project. The new Windpark Bedburg 3 will consist of nine wind turbines with a combined capacity of approximately 60 MW, to be constructed on reclaimed land at the former Garzweiler open-cast mine. Once operational, it will bring the municipality’s total installed wind power capacity to 156 MW.

Construction begins in April 2025, with access roads and foundation work kicking off in the summer. The wind farm is expected to be fully commissioned by the end of 2026. It will be built near the existing Königshovener Höhe and Bedburg A44n wind farms, with RWE and Bedburg each holding a 50 % stake in the project.

Mayor Sascha Solbach highlighted the economic and environmental benefits for local residents, noting that income from the wind farm—up to $280,000 (€250,000) annually—will support community initiatives. Neighboring Jüchen will also receive a share of the revenues.

The turbines—seven rated at 7 MW and two at 5.7 MW—will connect to the grid via RWE Power’s infrastructure. RWE CEO Katja Wünschel emphasised the project as a testament to their strong, ongoing collaboration with Bedburg in advancing Germany’s clean energy transition.
