Thailand / UK: Aibel has completed the second offshore converter station topside for Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm at its yard in Thailand. The structure, known as Hornsea 3 Link 2, began its journey to Europe on 22 October, according to a company announcement.
The milestone marks another major step in the development of the 2.9 GW Hornsea 3 project, which will become the largest single offshore wind farm in the world once operational.
Aibel and Hitachi Energy signed a contract with Ørsted in 2022 to deliver two HVDC offshore converter stations for the project. Under the agreement, Aibel is responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of both platforms, which are based on Hitachi Energy’s modular HVDC technology.
The first substation topside arrived from Thailand to Aibel’s yard in Haugesund, Norway, in June 2025, where it is now undergoing final outfitting and commissioning. The newly completed Link 2 will follow the same process before both platforms are installed at sea in 2026.
Heerema Marine Contractors, which secured the transport and installation contract in 2022, will handle offshore deployment of the platforms.
Located about 160 km off the Yorkshire coast, Hornsea 3 will comprise approximately 200 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW wind turbines. Once operational in 2027, it will supply enough clean energy to power millions of UK homes, strengthening the country’s position as a global leader in offshore wind.
