Serbia: Serbia has started construction under the BeoGrid 2025 programme, a major project to modernise the country’s transmission network and connect more renewable energy to the grid.
Work began in Belgrade’s Surčin suburb with the launch of two high-voltage lines between Belgrade and Novi Sad, worth around $25.5 M (€22 M). A new substation in Belgrade will also be built and linked to the Čibuk 1 wind farm through an 83-km line, ensuring a stable offtake of renewable power from South Banat.
In total, BeoGrid 2025 is valued at $238 M (€205 M) and includes six separate investments, among them the 400 / 110 kV Beograd 50 substation, new 400 kV connections, and several 110 kV lines and cables. According to Assistant Minister Radoš Popadić, the broader package of transmission projects in Serbia amounts to $1.16 B (€1 B), with $580 M (€500 M) earmarked for priority interconnections with neighbouring countries by 2030.
EMS general manager Jelena Matejić said the project is also part of the North Continental South East Corridor, a European plan to expand cross-border transmission capacity, especially with Romania. She added it will provide additional backup for the upcoming EXPO 2027 event in Belgrade.
Financed by the state and EMS, the project is expected to ease strain on Belgrade’s network, increase regional electricity exchange, and secure supply for consumers.
