North Macedonia, Skopje: EVN Macedonia has officially commissioned a new substation in Skopje, marking a $25 M (€22 M) investment and the first such facility built in the city centre in over 40 years.
The Centralna substation is notable for its compact design and advanced technological equipment. Built on an area ten times smaller than standard 120 MW facilities, it includes a 110 kV GIS installation, which is the latest technology in this segment, providing a modern, reliable, and safe energy infrastructure.
North Macedonia’s distribution system operator (DSO) said: “The facility is equipped with state‑of‑the‑art systems for remote control, cable monitoring, fire protection, and advanced electronic control and protection devices. For the first time in Macedonia, 110 kV cables are being used to power such a facility.”
EVN Macedonia CEO Wolfgang Maier described the project as a key step in modernising and stabilising Skopje’s electricity grid. “This investment strengthens the urban core’s energy network and sets the stage for reliable power supply in the future,” he said.
North Macedonia’s Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski highlighted that the new substation improves system stability and enhances the country’s energy outlook, increasing capacity to support new investments. Energy Minister Sanja Božinovska added that older substations in Skopje are outdated and overcapacity. “Centralna is not just a new facility, but a key solution that provides security to citizens and conditions for further urban development,” she said.
The project involved more than 30 companies, including GE, Siemens, KONČAR, Astor, Dalekovod Zagreb, Adra, Benning PSAM, and BMG. EVN Macedonia noted that this substation crowns 20 years of investment in the country’s energy sector, totaling over EUR 800 million.
