Scotland: SP Energy Networks has announced that a new Community Benefit funding programme will open in January 2026. The first round will make $10.4 M (£7.8 M) available to community groups located near eligible transmission infrastructure across central and southern Scotland.

The funding is intended to deliver long-term social, economic and environmental benefits for communities that host parts of the transmission network. SP Energy Networks is investing in upgrades to its system as electricity demand in the UK is expected to double by 2050, with most supply coming from renewable sources. Some of the existing transmission infrastructure is more than 70 years old, and the company is working to modernise it.

Local organisations, charities and social enterprises will be able to apply for grants from early 2026. The support can be used for projects related to skills development, employability initiatives, community spaces, active lifestyles and improvements to local green areas. Applications must address at least one priority area identified through earlier consultations with communities.

Guy Jefferson, Transmission Managing Director at SP Energy Networks, said the programme is designed to ensure communities share in the benefits of hosting energy infrastructure and to support local initiatives that strengthen the area.

Previous funding programmes, including the Green Economy Fund and the Transmission Net Zero Fund, have already invested over $33 M (£25 M) in more than 60 projects. Examples include support for Food Train’s electric delivery fleet and upgrades to the Glenkens Community Centre, which improved accessibility and energy efficiency.

Additional local funds are planned later in 2026, shaped through continued engagement with residents and stakeholders.
