UK, Scotland: SSEN Transmission has submitted a planning application to Perth and Kinross Council for the Cambushinnie 400 kV substation, a key part of its proposed upgrade of the Beauly to Denny overhead line from 275 kV to 400 kV. The project will enable the transmission of more clean, high-voltage renewable power across the UK, supporting national energy security and 2030 climate targets.
The new air-insulated switchgear substation will be located just west of the existing Braco West 275 kV site. After thorough environmental and technical assessments, Cambushinnie was selected as the most suitable location. Extensive community consultation has helped shape the final design, which includes measures for peatland restoration, biodiversity gain, and mitigation of noise and visual impact.
To support delivery, a new access road is planned to divert construction traffic away from Braco village, minimizing long-term disruption and protecting local trees and habitats. A separate planning application for the road will follow this summer.
No construction will begin until the access road is completed. SSEN Transmission thanked the community for their input and reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development and local engagement as it works with stakeholders and Perth and Kinross Council through the planning process.
