UK, Scotland: SSEN Transmission plans to invest at least $28.76 B between 2026 and 2031 to support the UK’s energy security and net-zero targets. The initiative is expected to create up to 8,400 jobs across the north of Scotland.

As part of this investment, SSEN Transmission has launched a new procurement process, inviting both new and existing contractors to apply for key elements of substation development under its RIIO-T3 and networks renewals investment program. The initiative includes a new framework agreement, with the maximum value for moderate substation works increasing from $26.14 M to $52.27 M. Contractors can now submit pre-qualification applications for critical substation projects, along with related overhead line and underground cable work.

These framework agreements are designed to help deliver projects across northern Scotland, with a combined estimated value of up to $1.83 B.

In a related development, SSEN Transmission has also secured approval from Highland Council’s South Planning Committee for the expansion of its Fort Augustus substation in Auchterawe. This expansion is part of the Beauly-Denny 400 kV uprating project, which will enhance the electricity transmission network across the region. The capacity of an existing circuit will increase from 275 kV to 400 kV, and new substations will be constructed at Beauly, Fasnakyle, and Braco.

These upgrades are a vital part of SSEN Transmission’s $26 B Pathway to 2030 investment program, helping to drive the region’s clean energy transition and support the UK’s energy security goals.
