Switzerland, Sursee: Swissgrid AG has completed the modernization of its 220 kV air-insulated substation in Sursee, Canton of Lucerne. The substation has been operating since 1981 and was nearing its end of life. The company decided to build a modern plant at the exact location that meets the current technological and ecological requirements.
PFIFFNER Systems AG served as the project and engineering lead. The project involved the renewal of the 220 kV outdoor substation, with the following essential components: dismantling and disposal of existing fittings and AIS apparatus; renewal of the 220 kV configuration in four bays (new 220 kV fittings) and retrofitting a new busbar longitudinal separation using pantographs and new foundations; delivery and installation of the new AIS apparatus, including scaffolding; renewal of the earthing system in the AIS bays according to Swissgrid standards and connection of new elements to this updated earthing system (e.g., to the latest AIS devices); foundations for the interface cabinet and wiring of all AIS apparatus to this cabinet; and protection barriers in the AIS system.
The entire substation had to be replaced in just nine months. The primary goal was to complete the project as the first turnkey 220 kV substation project while considering occupational safety, deadlines, quality, and costs.
Work began in mid-February 2024. In the first stage, dismantling the Gösgen line and transformer bay was on the agenda. Later, during peak times, up to 12 individuals worked in a confined space. Part of the plant remained operational and was only separated by a protective fence.
Two stages of the renovation were completed in June and October 2024. The system was successfully handed over to Swissgrid and put into operation and connected to the grid.
