Syria: The ten-year civil war has severely damaged the Arab nation’s infrastructure, reducing power generation to approximately 1,300 MW, well below the required 6,500 MW, said Khalid Aboudi, Director General of the Transmission and Distribution Corporation at the Electricity Ministry.

Syria is currently running on 14 power stations, including 3 hydro-electric plants.

“We need to build four new power plants with a generation capacity of 5,000 MW. As for investments, Syria needs around $40 B to rehabilitate the electricity infrastructure and construct new power stations,” Aboudi said.

Aboudi stated that the investments include implementing new technology to enhance efficiency, repairing war-damaged facilities, building new power stations, and upgrading and restoring power transmission and distribution networks.

He added that Qatar and Jordan have committed to supporting Syria’s power sector recovery by investing and offering expertise and essential supplies.

Aboudi also mentioned that Qatar recently agreed to provide Syria with approximately 2,000,000 m3 of natural gas to help fuel some of its electricity plants.
