India, Uttarakhand: Tata Power has put into operation the 400 kV Koteshwar–Rishikesh transmission line, a new link designed to evacuate 1 GW of hydropower from the Tehri–Koteshwar complex in Uttarakhand to several northern states and Union Territories. The line forms part of a wider effort to expand transmission capacity in India’s northern power corridor.

The project was implemented under NRSS XXXVI Transmission Ltd., operated by Resurgent Power Ventures Pvt. Ltd., a joint venture promoted by Tata Power, ICICI Bank, and global institutional investors. The new infrastructure will support renewable power flows to Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Delhi, with Tata Power stating that the asset will improve grid reliability and contribute to regional energy security.

Constructed across steep Himalayan terrain in New Tehri and Dehradun districts at altitudes above 1,816 metres, the project required specialised logistics and compliance with strict environmental requirements, with materials in remote stretches moved manually by head-loading. More than 500 skilled workers completed on-site works within a year after land clearance over 103 hectares. The Koteshwar–Rishikesh line is the third element of the NRSS XXXVI project, following earlier commissioning of the 400 kV LILO Sikar–Neemrana Double Circuit line and the 400 kV LILO Babai–Bhiwani Double Circuit line.

With this addition, Tata Power now has 7,083 circuit kilometres of transmission lines in operation or under execution nationwide. The company’s total generation portfolio stands at 15.9 GW, of which 44 percent is from renewable sources, and it has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045 while serving around 13 million customers in India.
