Poland: Poland’s distribution system operator Tauron has signed two new financing agreements with Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK), unlocking $1.4 B (€1.2 B) to drive grid transformation and digitalisation projects.
The majority of the financing – $1.34 B (PLN4.87 B, €1.14 B) – marks an amendment to a financing deal signed in December 2024 with BGK, which valued $3 B (PLN11 B). These funds, from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO), will be dedicated to enabling renewable energy integration and energy storage connections.
By 2030, Tauron expects to connect more than 1,430 renewable energy sources totalling nearly 1.9 GW, alongside 260 storage facilities with 2.8 GW capacity. To achieve this, extensive grid development and upgrades will be required. Planned investments include:
- 1,000 km of high-voltage lines
- 4,800 km of medium-voltage lines
- 21,000 km of low-voltage lines
- 140 HV/MV transformers and 3,000 MV/LV transformers
- 50 HV/MV stations and 3,000 MV/LV stations
- 2.3 million remotely read smart meters
A further $85.4 M (PLN310 M, €72.8 M) will fund digitalisation initiatives, improving grid efficiency with advanced monitoring and predictive analytics. This agreement is the first concluded under the “KPO – Supporting Advanced Digital Transformation” instrument.
Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski emphasised the role of the programme in “supporting digital transformation and safeguarding key services for citizens.” Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka highlighted its importance for “national security, grid reliability, and cheaper energy.”
Grzegorz Lot, CEO of Tauron, called the KPO funding “a unique opportunity for the Polish energy sector” that will modernise thousands of substations, extend cable networks by tens of thousands of kilometres, and deliver over two million smart meters to customers.
