Nigeria: The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has secured $1.16 B from development partners in 2025 to support major power projects across the country.
Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, TCN’s managing director, highlighted the achievement in his end-of-year message to journalists, noting that the funding has enabled projects such as the Abuja Feeding Scheme. This includes the construction of five new substations and a 330 kV transmission line. Some projects have already been completed, while others are ongoing, aimed at modernising the grid, expanding capacity, and preparing TCN to meet the growing energy demands of Nigeria’s economy.
Abdulaziz said, “The confidence shown by our development partners in TCN’s ability to deliver is both humbling and motivating. This year, we made significant strides to strengthen the nation’s infrastructure, rehabilitate ageing assets, and expand transformer capacity nationwide.”
With these efforts, TCN’s wheeling capacity has increased to 8,700 MW, better positioning the company to meet rising electricity demand. On 4 March 2025, TCN transmitted a record peak generation of 5,801.84 MW, delivering a maximum daily energy of 128,370.75 MWh across the country. Additionally, 82 new power transformers were commissioned, adding over 8,500 MVA to the grid and boosting reliability.
Despite these gains, Abdulaziz decried 131 incidents of vandalism recorded between January and November 2025. He noted that TCN is collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser, local security forces, and community vigilante groups to curb these attacks.
Looking ahead, Abdulaziz urged continued focus on accelerating project delivery, modernising infrastructure, prompt maintenance, and stakeholder engagement to advance the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry and support national growth.
