The Netherlands / Germany: TenneT has announced a partial termination of its contract with Petrofac for several offshore grid connection projects, citing Petrofac’s inability to meet its contractual obligations. The decision follows the company’s ongoing financial restructuring efforts.
In March 2023, TenneT signed a framework cooperation agreement with the Hitachi Energy/Petrofac consortium to deliver six 2 GW projects as part of TenneT’s broader 2 GW Programme, which comprises fourteen grid connection systems across the Netherlands and Germany.
Despite extensive collaboration to implement mitigation measures, Petrofac was unable to resolve its financial challenges. Consequently, TenneT exercised its right to partially terminate the contract for Petrofac’s scope and established a new solution involving Hitachi Energy and a replacement contractor.
The revised consortium will now oversee the Dutch offshore grid connections IJmuiden Ver Alpha, Nederwiek 1, Nederwiek 3, Doordewind 1, and Doordewind 2 as well as the German project LanWin5.
TenneT stated that its primary objective, shared by the new consortium, remains the timely delivery of offshore grid infrastructure in line with the Development Framework in the Netherlands and the Netzentwicklungsplan in Germany. The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining progress on the North Sea offshore wind rollout, supporting Europe’s transition to renewable energy.
