Uganda: Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (UEDCL) has announced major progress in its 2025 grid reinforcement programme, reporting the installation of 132 new transformers, the replacement of 206 faulty units, and plans to add 518 more across the distribution network. The company said these investments are essential to improving reliability and reducing outages nationwide.
Sector data shared by GROK shows that the programme, which was implemented after UEDCL’s April 2025 takeover of Umeme’s former distribution areas, has helped increase network availability to 98.1 %. Photos released by UEDCL showed teams offloading and installing transformers in multiple urban areas. However, replies to the update pointed out persistent local issues, including low voltage in Nkumba and recurring outages in Sonde.
Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu stated that the government and UEDCL have been undertaking “major technical interventions” to strengthen the distribution system. These include replacing hundreds of faulty transformers, rebuilding storm-damaged structures, and reinforcing substations such as Mbarara North (20–40 MVA), Kabale–Kisoro (2.5–5 MVA), Kakiri, Masaka Central, and ongoing works at Kawanda, Matugga and Mutundwe. She said a 100-day grid overhaul is replacing more than 47,000 rotten poles, expanding vegetation management, and investing $77 B (UGX 280 B) in modern equipment. Losses have already fallen from 19.1 % to 16.8 % in six months.
UEDCL also reported ongoing emergency measures after vandals damaged pylons in the Mukono area. Temporary wooden transmission structures are being installed by UETCL teams to restore supply while permanent repairs continue.
In Ntungamo District, UEDCL and the Ministry of Energy commissioned seven new transformers to replace units vandalised seven years ago, restoring electricity after years without supply. In Kanungu District, rural electrification works were completed to power Mpungu Sub-county and the new Mpungu Tea Factory, including new transmission lines and three transformers. UEDCL said the investment will strengthen agro-industrial development and improve rural livelihoods.
