Germany: Construction of the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms is set to begin in 2026, with Nordlicht 1 poised to become Germany’s largest offshore wind project. Both wind farms are expected to be fully operational by 2028.
“The Nordlicht offshore wind cluster marks a key milestone in the transition towards fossil-free energy. By accelerating Germany’s energy transformation and supporting industrial decarbonisation, it will deliver clean, dependable power while fostering innovation and sustainability,” said Helene Biström, Head of Business Area Wind at Vattenfall.
As part of the project, Vattenfall will repurchase shares in the Nordlicht cluster that BASF acquired in 2024. Meanwhile, BASF has secured long-term access to renewable electricity, ensuring a stable supply of green energy for its European chemical production as demand for clean power continues to grow.
The Nordlicht cluster will have a total net capacity exceeding 1.6 GW, reinforcing its role as a major contributor to Germany’s renewable energy landscape. Additionally, in line with Vattenfall’s sustainability initiatives, the wind farms will incorporate wind turbine towers partially made with low-emission steel, helping to reduce their carbon footprint by 16 %.
While the final investment decision for Nordlicht 1 has been confirmed, Nordlicht 2 remains conditional, pending regulatory approval.
