Vietnam, Phu Tho: On 4 August, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) and the National Power Transmission Project Management Board (NPTPMB) energised the upgraded 500 kV Viet Tri substation in Phu Tho province, northern Vietnam.
The upgrade is part of a broader effort to improve grid capacity and stability amid rising summer demand. Although construction concluded in July, energisation of phase 1 was delayed due to scheduling the necessary power outage to safely connect new components.
Phase 1 included the installation of a new 500 kV-450 MVA transformer (AT3), increasing the substation’s total capacity from 900 MVA to 1,350 MVA. The existing 500 kV busbar layout was also converted from a closed-ring to a breaker-and-a-half scheme, enhancing operational flexibility.
Phase 2 will upgrade the AT2 transformer from 450 MVA to 900 MVA, eventually bringing total substation capacity to 1,800 MVA.
The project, classified as a Group B special-grade energy initiative, was executed under live operating conditions and a strict timeline mandated by EVN. Despite the challenges, daily and weekly plans, close coordination, and support from Power Transmission Company No.1 ensured on-schedule delivery.
Once complete, the upgrade will strengthen the regional power supply, reduce transmission losses, and support economic growth across northern Vietnam.
