Vietnam: State utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN) has received the green light for the VND 7010 billion ($277.2 million) 500 kV Lao Cai-Vinh Yen transmission line in the northwestern region and to import power from China. Under a decision signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son, the project aims to help bring electricity from hydropower plants in the northwestern region to the grid, reduce power losses, and act as a backup infrastructure for power import from China.

According to reports, EVN can provide 20% of the project investment prior to tax and seek loans from commercial banks for the remaining amount. The line will link Lao Cai province bordering China and other northern provinces of Yen Bai, Phu Tho and Vinh Phuc. It will feature a 229 km long dual power line. The utility plans to start the construction of the project next month and complete it for connection to the national power grid next May.
