Brazil: WEG has supplied three single-phase 500 MVA power transformers for the Assis substation in Brazil, marking one of the largest alternating current transformer banks ever installed in the country. The equipment forms part of a project developed in partnership with TAESA – Transmissora Aliança de Energia Elétrica S.A.

Together, the three transformers provide a total transformation capacity of 1.5 GVA at 525 kV. The units will play an important role in adjusting the voltage of a 440 kV transmission line to 525 kV, supporting the development of Brazil’s transmission infrastructure.

The project required close technical collaboration between WEG and TAESA, covering engineering, manufacturing, logistics and commissioning. The transformers were produced at WEG’s manufacturing facility in Betim, in the state of Minas Gerais.

Each transformer weighs around 300 t and was transported approximately 800 km to the installation site in Assis, in the state of São Paulo. The delivery involved a carefully planned logistics operation to ensure safe transport of the heavy equipment.

The new transformers form part of the substation’s second transformation bank and contribute to strengthening an important corridor of Brazil’s Sistema Interligado Nacional (SIN). By increasing transformation capacity, the installation is expected to improve grid stability and reliability while supporting electricity supply to major consumption centres.

The project also highlights WEG’s experience in high-voltage equipment and large-scale power infrastructure, while reinforcing cooperation between industrial manufacturers and transmission operators to develop critical energy systems.
