Brazil, Jaraguá do Sul: WEG has announced an investment plan of approximately R$543 million ($99.8 million) to increase transformer production capacity in Brazil. The investments will be made over the next two years in manufacturing units in Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul.
In Minas Gerais, WEG will invest roughly R$370 million, expanding its power transformer factory in the city of Betim by nearly 24000 m2. Upon completion, expected in the second half of 2026, the manufacturing plant will have a total constructed area of 75000 m2.
In Rio Grande do Sul, the factory located in Gravataí will receive an investment of approximately R$128 million to increase the production capacity for transformers for voltage classes up to 230 kV. Completion is anticipated in the last quarter of 2026, with an addition of 7300 m2 to the constructed area. This will allow the company to meet the demand from electric utilities in Brazil and neighboring countries.
“We are intensifying our investments to keep up with the significant increase in demand for Transmission and Distribution solutions. With the energy transition and growth in electrification, there is a growing need for transformers and digital products that optimize electrical grids”, said Carlos Diether Prinz, Managing Director of T&D at WEG.
In December 2023, the company announced investments of R$1.2 billion to expand transformer production capacity in Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia. These investments are still underway and will be added to the new contributions, which should double the WEG’s global transformer production capacity by the end of this cycle.
